There was not much wind after the first day when these photos where taken. It was still very funny to watch and compete in 10 knots and watch Nicky get even more frustrated and competitive each time he got knocked out. It was a different class altogether but Ian still managed to trade a few moves with Steve Thorpe in the pub.
On Saturday afternoon, the ultimate stroke of luck: a semi final heat consisting of James, Iain and Nick. Only one of this intrepid trio could go through and scoring was on overall impression.
With me as a spectator a fair view could be given .(I was told off for standing in the judges vision ). Planing winds on big kit made it an all action semi. Iain was doing some nice board 360s but not finding his usual form , James was sailing like a fanny even his gybes where letting him down.
The judges were not getting the true picture. All credit to Nik who was sailing well pulling off a couple of nice chop hops and then a cranked duck gybe. Nik had it in the bag. The crowd where going crazy.
The yellow flag went up - one minute remained. It was Nik all the way
into the last thirty seconds until James got on the plane. It was all
over with less
than fifteen seconds left, when James pulled an excellent flat water forward.
The crowd were hysterical. James might have just clinched it.
Nervous moments
as the sailors return to the judging area and they announce James the
winner!! Well done James! The other competitors put a brave face
on it.
However, later in the pub their true disheartenment came to light.
So here's to Tiree. The gauntlet has been thrown down.
